Internal (Desktop) Blu-Ray Drives
According to the Computer Desktop Encyclopedia, Blu-Ray technology is "a high-capacity optical disc that holds 4.5 hours of high-definition video (HD) on a single-sided, single-layer 25GB disk. Announced in 2002 by Sony, Hitachi, Philips and other vendors, the Blu-ray technology uses a blue-violet laser that reads pits a third the size of a DVD on tracks that are packed much tighter together. Blu-ray supports the more advanced H.264 and VC-1 video encoding algorithms (codecs) as well as MPEG-2, which is used for DVD. It also supports 1080p, the highest HDTV resolution."
Blu-ray offers 25GB to 50GB of storage capacity on a disc. Its playback quality and recording speed are superior to anything that has come before it, and it is a great solution for the dilemma of increasing storage needs.
Blu-Ray technology is spreading across the globe at a rapid rate. According to the Blu-Ray Disc Association, "Blu-ray Disc is the de facto next-generation optical disc format for high definition audio-video and high-capacity data software applications."
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is responsible for promoting and developing business opportunities for Blu-ray Disc, "the next-generation optical disc format for storing high definition movies, games, photos and other digital content." The BDA has more than 180 members. Its Board of Directors consists of Apple, Dell Inc., HP, Hitachi, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc., TDK Corporation, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures and Television, and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
According to the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA), "In 2012, sales of Blu-ray Discs will exceed those of standard DVDs and will generate sales of $9.5 billion."
Even Apple snoots can take heart. Macs can support Blu-ray Disc drives as data drives, but the Mac doesn’t ship with a Blu-ray Disc drive option. The Macs still come with “SuperDrives” capable of burning DVDs. But, MCE Technologies has introduced its 6X Blu-ray Recordable Drive for Macs, natively compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later, it works inside the Mac Pro and Power Mac.
